In The Begining

“Life, rarely goes the way you want it to. And no one could have ever foreseen the tragedies that have befallen us these past few months. It is our duty to stand up and protect our families from the monsters that have brought us to our knees. Now is not the time to sit back and lick our wounds. Now is the time to FIGHT! Now is the time ….”

That was the last I heard as I walked past the center of the village. There are much more important things for me to be doing then to listen to these politics. Most everyone else in town was back there though, trying to decide who should be our so called mayor. We’ve waited 11 months since we lost contact with the surrounding cities. Not many of the runners we sent out ever came back. Those that did had came back with odd stories. “It just isn’t right.”

“What’s not right?”

“Geezus, Greg! Dammit don’t sneak up on me like that.” I chastised him. Greg wasn’t too bad, but dammit he scared the hell out of me.

“Off to the wall?” Greg posed the question as if he didn’t already know the answer.

“Well let us see. It is Tuesday, and is almost midday. So … No Greg, I’m off for a leisurely stroll.’ I slapped him upside the head to make my point clear. Granted I had to reach up a little. Greg is not a short guy, at about six foot eight inches compared to my five foot eleven. “Don’t ask stupid questions mate, it’s unbecoming.”

“Why you do that all the time?” Greg was wincing and rubbing the back of his curly blonde hair where I smacked him.

“Why do I do what? I only hit you because it was a stupid question. You know we work the gate together today.”

“No I meant why do you always come back with a smart ass reply?”

“It is better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass Greg.”

The rest of our walk we remained quiet. It was like that usually the closer we got to the gate. The only people lately who left outside the gate were the guards and farmers. I did not envy them at all. I did everything I could to avoid having to put myself in harms way. Don’t get me wrong, I am no coward. If I was a coward I would be one of the fools back in that crowd. They always found some reason to not be part of the guard units. I am logical, I do not look for trouble.
